Australia was not slow when implementing electricity into homes. The first use of electricity in Australia was in 1863 when the first electric light is put on display in Australia at the Observatory is Sydney. In 1888, street lamps were introduced and first placed in Tamworth. By 1894, Melbourne is the first city in Australia to have street lights and a power station. Sydney then gets a power station in 1904. It was not until the 1920's that homes in Australia started getting electricity. By 1927, about one third of homes in Australia have electricity, with the most popular item that uses electricity being the clothes iron.
